We live in a time of a great transformation. Today, neither Finland nor the US can count on the same security order that we got used to after the Cold War.  Instead, war and conflict exist on almost every continent. But where eternal peace does not exist, neither do eternal wars.  What could be Finland’s role in today’s conflict-ridden world?  What can a small country do to promote peace?

Pekka Haavisto is a long time member of the Finnish Parliament. He recently served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs when Finland joined Nato in 2023. As a Green Party leader Haavisto has also served as the Minister of the Environment and the Minister of International Development.

Haavisto is a peace negotiator and a defender of both democracy and human rights. Haavisto is especially experienced in foreign policy and international operations. He has led research into the environmental impact of wars and represented the EU and the UN in various crises all over the world. Haavisto has also authored numerous books. His beloved hobbies are literature, Beetle cars, and wooden boats.
