This presentation will give an overview of the Sámi people, give a history of the collection at UMD and resources/opportunities from the Sámi Cultural Center of North America, and touch on some of the ways these Duluth institutions can be used by researchers.
The Kathryn A. Martin Library is home to a large collection of Sámi materials. Who are the Sámi? What does it mean to have a collection of indigenous materials outside of traditional lands, and why does this collection exist in Duluth, MN? This presentation will give an overview of the Sámi people, give a history of the collection at UMD and resources/opportunities from the Sámi Cultural Center of North America, and touch on some of the ways these Duluth institutions can be used by researchers.
Presenter Bio: Chelsey Miller is responsible for Marketing/Communications at the Kathryn A. Martin Library (University of Minnesota Duluth) and is the bibliographer for the library’s Sámi Collection. She also serves on the board of directors at the Sámi Cultural Center of North America, located in Duluth, MN.
